Our goal at MedLaw Consulting is to improve patient safety. By learning from the mistakes of others, nurses are better prepared to understand how to prevent these same mistakes from happening again. This knowledge combined with proper documentation can minimize both hospital and nursing liability.
Hospitals and healthcare providers have learned to put barriers in place as a safety net to help prevent errors that could result in patient harm. For example, how does one verify that the correct medication is going to the correct patient? The process includes several steps:
- verifying the order
- checking allergies
- verifying the medication
- correct drug
- correct dose
- correct route
- correct time
- verifying the correct patient
- stated name
- identification band
|
Systems have been created to further increase this safety net by having the medication and ID band of the patient scanned into a computer system to verify the drug to be given correlates with the physician order as well as the patient ID. These systems have been put into place because mistakes have been made in the past that could have been prevented.
Our consultants offer presentations to hospitals and nursing staff, focusing on patient safety by increasing one's knowledge and awareness of actions that result in litigation. Each presentation is tailored to the nursing unit being addressed with specific examples of litigation presented. Each presentation addresses:
learning from the mistakes of others - a review of malpractice cases specific to the area of nursing being addressed
- documentation - a testament to the nursing care given to a patient and crucial to the nurse involved in litigation
- chain of command
- code blues
- a walk through the litigation process - what to expect if you get summoned for a case
